Biodiesel is biodegradable, non-toxic, renewable and domestically produced. A study completed by the U.S. Department of Energy shows biodiesel yielding 3.2 units of fuel energy for every unit of fossil energy consumed. By comparison, petroleum diesel yields 0.83 units of fuel energy per unit of fossil energy consumed. Because biodiesel is derived from vegetable oils, carbon is also recycled. As a result, biodiesel can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 78 % over petroleum diesel.
